East Asia Wrap: Newcomers Machida rise to top; Sangmu edge Jeonbuk

Hong Kong: Machida Zelvia, who got promoted to the J1 League as the 2023 Japanese second division champions, climbed to the top of the table four games into the campaign when they defeated Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo 2-1 at Sapporo Dome on Saturday. 

After scoring twice in a defeat to Ulsan Hyundai last week, Kim Hyeon-ug was again on target for Gimcheon Sangmu on Sunday as they defeated Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 1-0 while reigning champions Ulsan have a one-point lead at the top despite a 3-3 draw with Incheon United.

East Asia Wrap: Vissel fight back against Tokyo; Ulsan stay perfect

Hong Kong: Yuya Osako's superb free-kick sealed reigning champions Vissel Kobe’s comeback win against FC Tokyo in the J1 League on Saturday while Sanfrecce Hiroshima defeated Sagan Tosu 4-0 to move to the top of the table. 

Defending champions Ulsan Hyundai posted their second win from as many matches in K League 1 as they denied a Gimcheon Sangmu comeback to post a 3-2 win on Saturday while Gwangju are the only other team to maintain their perfect start in Korea Republic after a 4-2 win against Gangwon on Sunday.

Cephas Malele scored the only goal of the game as Shanghai Shenhua edged city rivals Shanghai Port 1-0 to win the Chinese Super Cup as the domestic season in China PR kicked off on Sunday.

Jordan top Group A with impressive show

Jeddah: Jordan will head into the West Asian Football Federation Women's Championship 2024 semi-finals as the firm favourites after ending their Group A campaign with a 2-0 win over Lebanon on Friday.

Guam, meanwhile, finished third in the group after a 2-0 defeat of hosts Saudi Arabia.

Jeddah: Jordan and Lebanon confirmed their West Asian Football Federation Women's Championship 2024 semi-final spots with a match to spare on Wednesday.

Defending champions Jordan defeated Guam 3-0 while Lebanon edged hosts Saudi Arabia 3-2 with the two sides to meet on Friday to determine the Group A winners.

Kuala Lumpur: Kitchee SC became the champions of the Hong Kong Senior Shield for the second consecutive season after Ruslan Mingazov struck an extra-time winner in a 2-1 victory over Eastern SC in the final at Mong Kok Stadium on Sunday.

Melbourne Victory’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end in Australia on Saturday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Macarthur FC who are now on a seven-match undefeated streak while Brisbane Roar posted a 5-1 win against Melbourne City who fell to their fourth defeat in five outings.

East Asia Wrap: Shanghai Port loss reignites title race; Vissel inch closer

Hong Kong: A 2-1 defeat for leaders Shanghai Port at the hands of Beijing FC on Friday threw the title race wide open in China PR with second-placed Shandong Taishan reducing the deficit to five points and the top two facing each other in a decisive clash on Sunday.

The title race in Japan also remains a close contest after frontrunners Vissel Kobe defeated Kashima Antlers 3-1 on Saturday, but Yokohama F. Marinos’ 4-1 win against Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo meant the defending champions remain four points behind with four matches left of the campaign.

Nishigaya expects improvement from Singapore

Guam: Head coach Takayuki Nishigaya expects a sharper performance from Singapore in  Round 2 of the  FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Preliminary Joint Qualification.

Singapore defeated Guam 1-0 in the second leg of their Round 1 tie on Tuesday, winning 3-1 on aggregate to advance to Group C where they have Korea Republic, China PR and Thailand for company.

Round 1: Singapore beat Guam to advance

Guam: Singapore advanced to the next stage after defeating Guam 1-0 in the second leg of their FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 tie on Monday.

The result secured Singapore a 3-1 win on aggregate and takes them into Group C of Round 2 with Korea Republic, China PR and Thailand for company.

Singapore’s Nishigaya satisfied, Guam’s Awa relishing return leg

Singapore: Singapore head coach Takayuki Nishigaya and his Guam counterpart Ross Awa took positives from their Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ first leg tie on Thursday.

Singapore won 2-1 with Christopher van Huizen and Jacob Mahler scoring in the first half while Jason Cunliffe’s 90th minute goal gave Guam a lifeline heading into Tuesday’s return match.

Singapore: Two first half goals helped Singapore secure a 2-1 first leg win against Guam in the Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ tie on Thursday.

Goals from Christopher Van Huizen and Jacob Mahler towards the end of the first half gave Singapore a good lead but the spurned opportunities may come back to haunt them after a late Jason Cunliffe goal set up an interesting return leg on Tuesday.
