Central & South Asia Wrap: IR Iran welcomes new season; East Bengal clinch Durand Cup

Tehran: The Iran Pro League returned to action with its 2026/27 season following the suspension of the 2025/26 edition in February, with the league now expanded from 16 to 18 teams.

Hisor: Sara Didar netted twice as Bam Khatoon FC came from behind to beat Jordan’s Etihad Club 3-1 on Sunday and qualify for the Group Stage of the AFC Women’s Champions League 2026/27™.

The side from the Islamic Republic of Iran topped Group E with seven points to earn their third consecutive Group Stage appearance while Etihad Club, who were in with a chance coming into the match, closed three points adrift.

Kuala Lumpur: Mehdi Taremi and Darwin Nunez were among the biggest names on the move as clubs across Asia continued to strengthen their squads.

Islamic Republic of Iran international Taremi completed a move to UAE Pro League side Al Wasl SC, while Uruguay forward Nunez switched Saudi Arabian clubs after joining Al Diriyah on loan from Al Hilal SFC.

Hisor: Bam Khatoon FC scored in the dying seconds to earn a 1-1 stalemate with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr Club in their AFC Women’s Champions League 2026/27™ Preliminary Stage tie on Thursday.

Sara Didar’s strike six minutes into stoppage time cancelled out Clara Luvanga’s 84th-minute spot-kick to put the Islamic Republic of Iran outfit in the driver’s seat of Group E, with Jordan’s Etihad Club their opponents on Sunday while Al Nassr will meet Tajikistan’s FC CSKA Dushanbe.

The Islamic Republic of Iran side took a two-goal lead in the first half and wrapped up the match after keeping a resurgent Dushanbe in check to get their Group E campaign off to a confident start.

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup™ China 2027 is all set for take off following the conclusion of the Qualifiers Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 30 teams - two more than the previous record of 28 from the 2019 Qualifiers - were divided into eight groups - six of four and two of three - to contest a single round-robin centralised league from October 5 to 11.

Each group winner will advance to the Finals, joining the quartet of teams that have qualified directly as the top four finishers from the 2026 campaign: defending champions DPR Korea, runners-up Japan, and semi-finalists Australia and China PR.

Seattle: Islamic Republic of Iran must wait to discover their fate after playing to a 1-1 draw with Egypt in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G match on Friday.

Iran - who had a goal heartbreakingly ruled out for offside in the dying seconds - finished third in the group and will only know if the point is enough to take them through to the knockout stage for the first time as one of the eight best third-placed sides.

Egypt, meanwhile, secured their place in the knockout phase for the first time in their history and will face Australia in the Round of 32.
