Al Rayyan: AFC Champions League 2011 winning coach Jorge Fossati has made a high profile return to Qatar after being unveiled as the new head coach of Al Rayyan SC.
The 62-year-old Uruguayan was presented at a press conference by the club’s Vice President Rashid Al Khalifa and Head of Football Ali Salem having made the move from Uruguayan side Penarol.
Fossati has fond memories of Qatar where he first coached Al Sadd from 2006 to 2007 winning all four domestic titles with them, before taking over the helm of the Qatari national team from 2007 to 2008.
The former Uruguay national team boss returned to Qatar to lead Al Sadd again between 2010 and 2012 seasons during which time he helped the Wolves win the 2011 AFC Champions League in a dramatic campaign.
With Rayyan just promoted to the Qatar Stars League (QSL) after winning the Qatargas League, Fossati is hoping that the club will make their mark in the top-flight and qualify for the AFC Champions League.
“A number of players in the squad have had previous experience of the Qatar Stars League. In addition I have coached in it for a number of years. We will do well,” he said.
“I am happy to be back and coaching Al Rayyan, it is a privilege. We now have the chance re-emerge into the Qatar Stars League in a positive manner.”
