Kuala Lumpur: The first in a new series looking at the key players who are aiming to take their clubs beyond this season's AFC Champions League quarter-finals.
KEY PLAYER: WU LEI – Shanghai SIPG
AFC Champions League Record
Appearances: 8
Goals: 5
PROFILE
Shanghai SIPG’s most high profile Chinese player needs little introduction. Wu Lei made his professional debut for Shanghai while they were still in the third tier, becoming the youngest player in a professional Chinese football game at 14 years old.
A decade on, Wu is now a fully-fledged China international and the club’s all-time top scorer. Despite playing on the wing, the 24-year-old has developed a knack of scoring timely goals.
His five strikes in the AFC Champions League so far put him level in second place with Igor Sergeev, although both are quite some way from Adriano’s 11-goal haul. Shanghai will hope their star player continues finding the net as they aim for a first final.
