AFC Champions League™ 2022 (EAST) – The Host Cities

Kuala Lumpur: Between April 15 and May 1, four cities across three countries in Southeast Asia will be the venues for the East Zone of the AFC Champions League™ 2022 (EAST) group stage with Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam hosting the 19 teams.

In an effort to ensure continuity of Asia’s premier club competition despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the AFC held the 2020 edition in a centralised format in Qatar, with the cities of Doha and Al Wakrah hosting the games.

Last year, hosting rights for group stage matches were divided between Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and India for the West, while Uzbekistan and Thailand hosted games in the East.

Group A: Sharjah power back to disappoint Istiklol

Riyadh: Sharjah FC of UAE bounced back in style to see off Tajikistan’s Istiklol 2-1 in Group A of the AFC Champions League™ 2022 on Monday.

Manuchehr Dzhalilov scored the opener for Istiklol in the first half but Sharjah came back fighting with goals from Caio and Bernard to give the Emirati side their first three points.

Group B: Al Shabab too strong for Al Jazira

Riyadh: Al Shabab FC continued their winning start to the AFC Champions League™ 2022 thanks to a 3-0 win against Al Jazira FSC in Group B at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium on Monday.

Carlos Junior broke the deadlock in the sixth minute, before Turki Al Ammar doubled their lead heading into halftime, with the Brazilian securing all three points with his effort in the 78th minute.

Group E: Super Al Faisaly stun Al Sadd

Dammam: Al Faisaly FC recorded their first-ever win in the AFC Champions League™, beating 2011 champions Al Sadd SC 2-1 at the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium on Matchday Two of Group E on Monday.

Al Sadd had initially taken a fourth minute through Hassan Al Haydos, but Al Faisaly drew level with Hicham Faik finding the back of the net in the 16th minute, with Julio Tavares scoring the eventual winner in the 53rd minute.

Group B: Mumbai City edge Air Force Club for historic triumph

Riyadh: Mumbai City came back from a goal down to defeat Air Force Club 2-1 in Group B of the AFC Champions League™ 2022 on Monday, the first win for an Indian side at this stage of the continental showpiece.

After a goalless first half, substitute Hammadi Ahmad gave Air Force Club the lead before Mumbai City rallied with goals from Diego Maurício and Rahul Bheke to seal the historic win at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh.

Group E: Stanojevic double takes FC Nasaf past Al Wehdat

Dammam: Two second-half goals from Marko Stanojevic gave FC Nasaf a valuable 2-0 win against Al Wehdat SC on Matchday Two of the AFC Champions League™ 2022 Group E on Monday.

After a goalless first half, Stanojevic struck in the 71st and 85th minutes to help Nasaf collect all three points and their first win in the group.
