Kuala Lumpur: Having lived in the shadow of illustrious domestic rivals Al Hilal and Al Ittihad, Al Ahli have sought to forge a reputation of their own in the AFC Champions League in recent seasons, with the club narrowly missing out on adding their name to the continent’s Roll of Honour.
But while Al Hilal dominated the 1990s and Al Ittihad were one of the premier forces in Asian football following the turn of the millennium, Al Ahli were the first club from Saudi Arabia to make their mark in the Asian Club Championship.
In 1985, when the competition was reactivated after lying dormant since 1971, the team from Jeddah were the first from their nation to reach the final of a continental competition when Al Ahli advanced to the deciding game in the Asian Club Championship.
