Draw with Esteghlal a boost for Al Shorta, says head coach Ilic
Erbil: Al Shorta head coach Aleksandar Ilic was satisfied despite having to settle for a share of the points with Esteghlal FC in their 2020 AFC Champions League Group A tie on Monday.
Hussam Kadhim put the ball into his own net in the first half to give Islamic Republic of Iran's Esteghlal the lead at Franso Hariri Stadium but Ali Fayez salvaged a point for the home team from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half.
Group A - MD1: Al Shorta (IRQ) 1-1 Esteghlal FC (IRN)
Erbil: Iraq’s Al Shorta collected a point on their return to the AFC Champions League after holding Islamic Republic of Iran’s Esteghlal FC to a 1-1 draw at Franso Hariri Stadium in Group A on Monday.
The home team went into the game dreaming of becoming the first-ever Iraqi side to defeat an Iranian team in the AFC Champions League after seven previous meetings between teams from the two neighbouring nations.
Group A - MD1: Al Wahda FSCC (UAE) 1-1 Al Ahli Saudi FC (KSA)
Abu Dhabi: Rim Chang-woo’s last-minute equaliser rescued a point for Al Wahda FSCC, cancelling out Abdulfattah Asiri’s opener for Al Ahli Saudi FC as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw on Matchday One of the 2020 AFC Champions League Group A on Monday.
The Saudis travelled to Al Nahyan Stadium knowing they were yet to record a win in their two previous attempts against Al Wahda, having lost once and drawn the other in the 2008 AFC Champions League group stage.
Group C - MD1: Sharjah (UAE) 0-1 Al Taawoun FC (KSA)
Sharjah: Faisal Darwish’s magnificent first-half free-kick was the difference as Al Taawoun FC came away from Sharjah with the three points, defeating Sharjah FC 1-0 on Matchday One of the 2020 AFC Champions League Group C on Tuesday.
With both teams appearing in the competition for just the second time in their history, there was a lot of intrigue in the air at the Sharjah Stadium where the visitors were attempting to get their first-ever away victory.
Group C - MD1: Al Duhail SC (QAT) 2-0 Persepolis FC (IRN)
Doha: Mario Mandzukic opened his 2020 AFC Champions League account as Qatar’s Al Duhail SC defeated Persepolis of the Islamic Republic of Iran 2-0 at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Group C on Tuesday.
Coach Walid Regragui’s men settled the tie inside the first 15 minutes with a quick double-salvo.
With just five minutes gone, Almoez Ali’s persistence coupled with a lack of discipline from Persepolis defender allowed Mandzukic to get his first goal in Asia’s prime club competition.
Group D - MD1: Al Nassr (KSA) 2-2 Al Sadd SC (QAT)
Riyadh: A highly entertaining clash at the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Stadium saw Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr and Qatar’s Al Sadd SC play out a 2-2 draw in their opening 2020 AFC Champions League Group D match on Tuesday.
The two teams had in the quarter-finals of the previous edition, with the first leg ending in a 2-1 home victory for Al Nassr.
