Kuala Lumpur: The overall attendance figure for this season’s AFC Champions League has surged passed the two million mark and, in the process, made the competition’s 2015 edition the most watched ever.
In total, some 2,034,841 supporters have now witnessed the 133 Play-off, Group Stage and Knockout Stage games – a figure that surpasses the previous record of 2,021,025 which was set in 2013.
AFC Acting General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John said: “These figures show the increasing interest in the AFC’s competitions. Whilst we were of course thrilled to see the numbers, this didn’t come as a surprise. This year’s AFC Champions League has already had some very exciting matches, and everyone is looking forward to the season finale, with the two legs of the final on November 7 and November 21.”
The 2015 average attendance currently stands at 15,299, with the eagerly anticipated second legs of the quarter-finals to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Iran giants Persepolis have once again topped the attendance table, with 100,000 spectators attending their Group A encounters with Bunyodkor and Al Nassr at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.
Persepolis’ Round of 16 showdown with Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal on May 19 also attracted the same number of fans.
