AG (W): Japan, DPR Korea set up final showdown

The East Asian nation's bid for an unprecedented fourth title and the first to win back-to-back crowns was ended by a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat after the decider had ended goalless after 120 minutes.

DPR Korea suffer penalty heartbreak in final

Lodz: Goalkeeper Laia Lopez made two crucial saves in a shootout to help Spain clinch the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 title after defeating holders DPR Korea 4-3 on penalties on Sunday.

Spain and defending champions DPR Korea could not be separated in a tightly-contested decider. The game went to penalties, where Lopez saved efforts from Choe Yon A and finally Pak Il Sim as La Rojita claimed their second U-20 showpiece title following their triumph at Costa Rica 2022.

It is also the second global title in succession for Spain, whose senior men's team won the FIFA World Cup 2026 in July.

Pak Ok I, Choe Rim Jong and So Ryu Gyong were all on target as the three-time champions produced another masterful display to move within one victory of retaining their title. 

DPR Korea are now just one match away from becoming the first team to retain the U-20 showpiece. Few would bet against them although Spain, who dispatched Italy 2-0 in their semi-final, will provide the sternest of tests.

Kuala Lumpur: China PR and DPR Korea became the final two teams to book their berths in the Asian Games 2026 men’s football quarter-finals after the completion of the group stage on Wednesday.

Kuala Lumpur: The concluding day of the Asian Games 2026 Group Stage for women’s football on Monday saw eight sides book their berths in the quarter-finals.

Japan, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Korea Republic, China PR, Uzbekistan, Philippines and Vietnam all advanced to the last eight stage.

DPR Korea will face Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals, Japan play the Philippines, China PR take on Vietnam while Korea Republic will battle it out with Uzbekistan with the matches to be played on Friday and Saturday.

Lodz: DPR Korea struck twice in stoppage time to defeat Canada 2-0 and advance to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 on Sunday.

Kuala Lumpur: Japan and Thailand continued to impress at the Asian Games 2026, registering emphatic wins in Group A of the men’s football tournament on Sunday to confirm their places in the quarter-finals.

Thailand powered to a 5-1 win over Hong Kong, China, while Japan were equally dominant, cruising 7-0 past Kyrgyz Republic.

In Group B, Islamic Republic of Iran and China PR played to a goalless draw to move onto four points each.
