Parramatta: Melbourne City go into their first-ever A-League Grand Final on Sunday with coach Erick Mombaerts insisting qualification for Australian football’s showpiece clash against Sydney FC should not be seen as a success.

Mombaerts’ side saw off Western United FC in the semi-finals on Wednesday and take on the defending A-League Champions at Western Sydney Stadium looking to deny Sydney FC a record fifth Grand Final win.

“We have done a very good season, it’s a first time to reach a final but now we have one more game to win,” said the Frenchman. “It’s not enough to reach the final. Now it’s very important to expect to win this.”

Al Hilal SFC seal 16th Saudi Pro League title

Riyadh: Al Hilal SFC clinched the 2019-20 Saudi Pro League title with two matches to spare following a 4-1 win over Al Hazm on Saturday. 

The win took the 2019 AFC Champions League winners to 66 points, six ahead of Al Nassr but a better head-to-head record against the defending champions means Al Hilal secured their 16th league title.

Al Hilal owed their win to French striker Bafetimbi Gomis, who scored a hat-trick to take his season tally to 24 goals, three behind Al Nassr’s Abderrazak Hamdallah at the top of the scoring charts.

Home of the Matildas in Victoria moves one step closer

Sydney: Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced that a proposed Home of the Matildas facility in Victoria moved one step closer on Sunday, with the state government announcing funding to kick start the project.

The Victorian Government confirmed it will commit A$1.5 million towards master planning and design for the development, and a separate Home of Rugby Union, to be located at La Trobe University, Bundoora.

The facility will also serve as the future headquarters of Football Victoria and the home of its high-performance programmes for women, men, girls and boys.

Miklayev returns as Lokomotiv boss

Tashkent: Struggling PFC Lokomotiv have turned to a familiar face to arrest their alarming form slump, with former head coach Andrey Miklayev returning to the role on Saturday.

The 52-year-old returns on a permanent basis for a third time, in addition to two stints as caretaker boss, with highly experienced former Uzbekistan international Timur Kapadze also joining as an assistant.

Miklayev takes the hot seat with the Tashkent club in the midst of their worst run of form in a number of years.

More silverware for Ji, Kerr as Chelsea win Community Shield

London: Two of Asia’s biggest women’s football stars have claimed another title, helping Chelsea defeat Manchester City 2-0 in Saturday’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

Korea Republic star Ji So-yun and Australia striker Sam Kerr both started for the English champions, who continued their recent dominance of the domestic scene.
