Saraburi: Thailand’s AFC Champions League hopefuls Chonburi FC opened their domestic campaign on a positive note as they downed Saraburi 3-1 at Bor Jor Stadium on Friday.
Brazilian Thiago Cunha opened the scoring for Chonburi just three minutes into the Thai Premier League opener but Tinnakorn Asurin drew newly promoted Saraburi level two minutes before the break.
The second half proved decisive for the Sharks however, as Kirati Keawsombut restored their advantage on 81 minutes before Brazilian striker Leandro Assumpcao scored Chonburi's third on the stroke of full-time.
Chonburi are aiming to win a spot in the AFC Champions League group stage when they take on Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in a Play-off match at Kashiwa Stadium on February 17.
If Chonburi win the Play-off, they will be placed in Group E along with 2006 ACL champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors from Korea Republic, China’s Shandong Luneng FC and Binh Duong of Vietnam.
