Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) deeply condoles the passing of Melaka United’s Australian-born goalkeeper Stefan Petrovski who was struck by lightning during the Malaysian club’s training session on April 5.
The 18-year-old, who was one of two Melaka United players struck by lightning during the training session, was pronounced dead on Sunday after bravely battling his critical condition.
Both players were rushed to hospital but, while the other player, Muhammad Afiq Azuan, eventually recovered, Petrovski remained in critical condition for almost a month.
Of Serbian and Malaysian heritage, Petrovski played for Australia’s National Premier League 1 side Sydney Olympic before moving to Melaka United, a second division club.
The thoughts and prayers of the AFC and the rest of the Asian football community are with his family and friends.
