Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Social Responsibility Committee has agreed to sign an MoU with the Special Olympics Asia Pacific (SOAP) to create awareness on intellectual disability (ID).
The committee, which met under the chairmanship of Jordan’s HRH Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, were given a presentation by Special Olympics Malaysia (SOM) President Dato’ Mohd Feisol Hassan and Vice-President Dato’ Peter Velappan on their activities.
SOM will host the inaugural Special Olympics Unified Football World Cup between November 1 and 12, 2014. AFC will also provide technical support for this event.
Under the MoU, AFC will support SOAP in ID football competitions, football development, football equipment, support healthcare programmes and introduce and channel AFC Dream Asia partners.
The members were informed that a new initiative in ‘Faces of Dream Asia’ has been launched to leverage popularity of football stars and celebrities for noble causes. The ambassadors will be appointed on international, regional and local levels and will be engaged in public appearances and talks, pre-recorded social messages via multimedia clips, printed materials, etc.
Decision of this committee needs to be ratified by the AFC Executive Committee to take effect.
