Kuala Lumpur: The official draw for the AFC U-14 Girls’ Regional Championship 2014 for the ASEAN, East and South/Central regions will take place on 5 February 2014.
The draw will be held at the AFC House in the Malaysian capital at 11am (Malaysian time) for the unseeded girls’ championship which was launched in 2013 and is entering its second edition this year.
Eight teams in the East regional championship – 2013 winners China, runners-up DPR Korea, third-place winners Korea Republic, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, and Northern Mariana Islands – will vie for top honours in the competition to be held from 28 May to 2 June in China.
The ASEAN region will see seven nations – inaugural champions Vietnam, runners-up Thailand, third-place winners Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore – battling out in their regional competition to be hosted by Vietnam from 10 to 15 June.
Sri Lanka will be the hosts for the South and Central region that will pit last year’s champions India, runners-up Iran, third-place winners Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Tajikistan into the fray from 4 to 9 March.
The girls’ regional competitions began in 2008 as a Girls’ Festival of Football that was more educational than competitive in nature and was held annually.
In 2012, the festivals became more competitive as they became the AFC U-13 Girls Football Tournaments. Then, the current AFC U-14 Girls’ Regional Championships started in 2013.
