Amman: Jordan’s hopes of a place in the AFC U-19 Championship 2014 were dealt a massive blow after the qualifying Group B hosts were defeated 2-1 by Yemen in the penultimate round of fixtures on Thursday.
Things started brightly enough for the Hashemite Kingdom with Ala’ Emair Mohammad Al Marafi giving Jordan the lead with 14 minutes at the Amman International Stadium played.
But the advantage lasted just five minutes with Yemen skipper Ala Addin Abdullah Mahdi netting the equaliser.
The tie remained locked at 1-1 until the 79th when midfielder Sulaiman Abdo Mohammed Hezam scored the winning goal, which put Yemen second in the Group B standings with six points, two more than Jordan and the Maldives and three less than leaders the UAE, who maintained their 100% record with a 6-0 hammering of Afghanistan earlier on Thursday.
The winners of the nine groups and the six best runners-up will join hosts Myanmar in next year’s AFC U-19 Championship.
