Incheon: Vietnam booked their place in the quarter-finals at the 17th Asian Games on Tuesday after recording an emphatic 5-0 win over Hong Kong.
The Vietnamese got off to a dream start after a Wong So Han own-goal handed them a fifth-minute lead, and they edged further ahead ten minutes later when Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung found the back of the net.
The contest was effectively over when Nguyen Thi Xuyen made it 3-0 from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime, but Vietnam showed no signs of letting up after the break and Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet was next to strike in the 69th minute.
Ten minutes from time, the rout was completed as Pham Hai Yen added a fifth to cap off a dominant display from her side.
Standing in wait for the Vietnamese in the quarters are Thailand, who will head into the tie with plenty of confidence after putting 20 goals past Maldives and India in their past two matches.
In the other last-eight ties, 2010 gold medallists Japan will meet India, Korea Republic take on Chinese Taipei, while China face off against DPR Korea.
