Ho Chi Minh City: Recently appointed futsal coach Bruno Garcia Formoso is confident of taking Vietnam higher up the Asian ranking but has played down expectations of taking the ASEAN nation beyond the group stage of the AFC Futsal Championship when Vietnam host the tournament from April 30 to May 10.
"The team is experiencing a lot of changes. A new coach with a new method and new blood in the team will need time to improve," Formoso told Vietnamese media following a training session at the Thai Son Nam Indoor Stadium.
Former Peru national fustal team coach Formoso was appointed head coach of Vietnam on a three-year-contract, replacing Italian Sergio Gargelli, and is keen to have an input in the long-term development of Vietnamese fustal.
"At the moment, Vietnam rank 14th in Asia, but I hope in one or two years the country will be in the top eight, and then the top four is the next target," continued the 40-year-old Spaniard, who also coached Chinese futsal club side Hangzhou Dragons.
"But the task is very hard. We must work on young players at different levels, from U15s to U21s.”
