Hong Kong: A Nike Cup Hong Kong Five 2016 futsal tournament was recently organised by the Hong Kong Football Association with cooperation from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
The futsal and grassroots tournament was known as one of the major events influencing Hong Kong’s small-sided football culture and certainly a cradle for nurturing Hong Kong’s football talent.
The preliminary rounds were held between February and March of this year with the final round held in MacPherson Playground, Mongkok, an iconic futsal court for the local players.
A total of 476 matches took place in this territory-wide competition held in nine age groups, from the U-8s to the Men’s and Women’s Open, with some 3,480 amateur players and youngsters participating.
Twelve U-8 teams got their first taste of tournament this year and the HKFA will investigate the opportunity to raise the number of U-8 teams in future years to recruit more young players.
Adding enthusiasm to the tournament were sports and recreation undergraduate students who offered players sports massage and stretching on the pitch to help them recover and get ready for the next game.
In addition, a ‘skill challenge’ was open to the public to increase the excitement with family and friends joining hands and enjoying the challenge.
