Riyadh: Al Ittihad defeated 2013 AFC Champions League quarter-finalists Al Shabab 4-2 on Wednesday to win the King’s Cup of Champions, Saudi Arabia’s main domestic cup tournament.
After a goalless first-half at a packed King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh Mokhtar Falatah put the Jeddah giants 1-0 up four minutes into the second half before Fahad Al Muwallad doubled Al Ittihad’s advantage eight minutes later.
Nassir Al Shamrani, a scorer in the first leg of Al Shabab’s 5-1 aggregate victory in the Round of 16 in this year’s ACL, pulled one back in the 69th minute but just four minutes later Naif Hazazi restored Al Ittihad’s two-goal lead.
Al Shamrani scored his and Al Shabab’s second with eight minutes left to play but any hopes that the Riyadh side would find the equaliser ended one minute into stoppage-time when Hungary international György Sándor sealed Al Ittihad’s 4-2 triumph.
