Johor Baru: AFC Cup quarter-finalists Johor Darul Ta’zim began their Malaysia Cup campaign with a win on Friday as they beat Perak 2-0 to hand themselves a major boost ahead of Tuesday’s continental showdown with South China.
Despite the absence of several key players including captain Safiq Rahim and Argentinean forward Luciano Figueroa, Malaysia’s reigning champions dominated throughout as goals from Safee Sali and S. Chantaru sealed an opening Group B win.
JDT duly went ahead some 60 seconds later when Safee converted Chantaru’s cross with a neat header, before Chantaru converted a header of his own in the 21st minute.
Brazilian striker Charles Souza Chad Chad hit the post for Perak in a second half which saw the visitors’ misery compounded by the dismissal of Mohd Hisyamudin Mohd Shaari when the midfielder picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Gary Steven Robbat in the 89th minute.
The win sees JDT go to the top of Group B as the crucial second leg of their quarter-final tussle with South China looms large on the horizon.
The first leg in Malaysia ended in a 1-1 draw after Mahama Awal cancelled out an earlier Figueroa strike.
