Bekasi: A hat-trick from Hwang Ui-jo and an extra time penalty from Hwang Hee-chan sealed Korea Republic a 4-3 win over Uzbekistan on Monday to advance to the 2018 Asian Games Indonesia men's football semi-finals on Monday.
It was a battle of giants at the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium, which featured 2014 Incheon Asian Games gold medallists Korea Republic taking on the 2018 AFC U23 champions Uzbekistan.
A key difference from Korea Republic’s campaign four years ago was livewire and captain Son Heung-min, who brought in a wealth of experience to the young squad, and in the fifth minute, he surged down the middle before sending a superb through pass to the right to Hwang Ui-jo, who then released a crackling strike to open the scoring with his sixth goal of the tournament.

Cibinong: United Arab Emirates proved sharper from the penalty spot as they overcome DPR Korea for a semi-final spot in the 2018 Asian Games Indonesia men's football at the Pakan Sari Stadium on Monday.
Goalkeeper Mohamed Alshamsi was the hero for UAE after he saved So Jong-Hyok's spot-kick to send the West Asians 5-3 on penalties into the last four following a 1-1 score after extra time.
UAE will play Japan in Wednesday's semi-finals.
DPR Korea, the 2014 silver medallists, created more chances in the first half against the West Asians who just had one shot at goal.
Midfielder Kim Kuk-Bom could have given the Koreans an early lead but UAE shot stopper Alshamsi stayed alert.
It was a cagey affair as neither side wanted to get caught out on the break as they both drew blanks on the stroke of halftime.

Bekasi: Super sub Nguyen Van Toan’s 108th minute goal sent Vietnam to the 2018 Asian Games Indonesia men's football semi-finals for the first time since the country’s unification after beating Syria 1-0 on Monday.
Syria, who edged Palestine 1-0 in the Round of 16, had the lion’s share of possession and tested Vietnamese goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung numerous times but the Southeast Asians held a solid defence to keep both teams searching for the opening goal.
Park Hang-seo’s charges had used their defensive capabilities to great effect in the tournament, advancing to the quarter-finals without conceding a single goal. However, their forays upfront lacked bite and Syrian custodian Ahmad Madnya was hardly tested.

Cibinong: Japan booked their spot in the semi-finals after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia in the 2018 Asian Games Indonesia men's football at the Pakansari Stadium on Monday.
Japan pressured their opponents from the start and with Saudi Arabia pinned in their own half, the East Asians came close to scoring several times in the opening 20 minutes but Yuto Iwasaki and Daizen Maeda were wasteful in front of goal.
The Samurai Blue limited the West Asians’ advances and kept them quiet for the most part of the half with only Abdulrahman Abdullah Ghareeb’s coming close in the 26th minute.
