Kuwait's Enad expects Oman to defend title 

Doha: Kuwait head coach Thamer Enad believes Oman are favourites to defend the Gulf Cup although his players will give everything to win when the two sides meet in Group B at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Saturday.

Kuwait enjoyed a perfect start to their campaign by defeating Saudi Arabia 3-1 on Wednesday and know another win will all but seal their semi-final berth.

Oman opened their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Bahrain, adding spice to Saturday's encounter.

Group A: Iraq defeat UAE, Qatar bounce back

Doha: Iraq registered their second consecutive win in Group A of the 2019 Gulf Cup, defeating United Arab Emirates 2-0 at the Khalifa International Stadium on Friday.

Qatar bounced back from their 2-1 loss to Iraq with an emphatic 6-0 win over Yemen in the group's evening match.

The win confirmed Iraq's place in the semi-finals as they now top the group with six points while UAE and Qatar will face off on Monday to decide the second team to advance to the last four stage.

Doha: Kuwait enjoyed a bright start to their 2019 Gulf Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory against Saudi Arabia at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Wednesday.

Defending champions Oman were held to a goalless draw by Bahrain in the other Group B match with both teams failing to put away their chances.

Doha: A Mohammed Qasim brace steered Iraq to a 2-1 win against Qatar in the opening match of the 2019 Gulf Cup at Khalifa International Stadium on Tuesday.

Ali Mabkhout scored a hat-trick as United Arab Emirates defeated Yemen 3-0 to move to the top of the Group A standings as the 24th edition of the tournament got off to a spectacular start.

Former Oman head coach Pim Verbeek passes away

Kuala Lumpur: Pim Verbeek, who guided Oman to the AFC Asian Cup knockout stage for the first time in UAE 2019, passed away on Thursday.

Verbeek, 63, had been ill for some time after stepping down as Oman head coach following the AFC Asian Cup in February.

A respected coach, Verbeek's involvement in Asian football started in 2000 as Guus Hiddink's assistant when his Dutch compatriot was head coach of Korea Republic.

Verbeek was then appointed Korea Republic's U23 head coach in 2005-06, before assuming the national team head coach role in 2006-07.

Big win a boost for Kuwait's hopes, says Enad

Kuwait City: Head coach Thamer Enad said Kuwait’s 9-0 win against Chinese Taipei on Thursday has boosted his side’s chances in Group B of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

Youssef Naser scored a brace while Fahad Al Ansari, Mubarak Al Faneeni, Bader Al Mutawa, Faisal Zaid, Shabib Al Khaldi and Faisal Ajab scored a goal each with Chinese Taipei’s Chan Wei-chuan adding to the win with an own goal.

The win took Kuwait to seven points and second in the group, ahead of Jordan on goal difference. Jordan suffered a 1-0 defeat to Australia in Group B’s other match on Thursday.

MD6 - Group E: Oman 1-0 India

Muscat: Oman edged India 1-0 on Tuesday to stay in sight of Qatar in Group E of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

The match was a cagey affair with Muhsen Saleh Al Ghassani's 33rd minute strike securing the points for Oman at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

The win took Oman to 12 points, one behind Qatar while the defeat meant India still await their first victory of the Asian Qualifiers, having drawn three and lost two. Qatar edged Afghanistan 1-0 in the other Group E tie on Tuesday.
