Seoul: Lee Dong-gook has been recalled to the Korea Republic squad for next month's friendlies against Venezuela and Uruguay with the striker just one game away from 100 appearances for the Taeguk Warriors.
Lee's fine current form for K League Classic side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors has seen the veteran forward brought back into the fold after he was omitted from former head coach Hong Myung-bo's plans for last summer's FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The one-time Werder Bremen and Middlesbrough player was also snubbed by Guus Hiddink for the 2002 World Cup, and missed the 2006 global extravaganza through injury.
The 35-year-old, who has scored 11 league goals so far this season, has not played for his country since last June's World Cup qualifier against Iran, but will see the clashes with Venezuela on September 5 and Uruguay three days later, as an ideal opportunity to stake a claim to be in the Korea Republic party which will head to Australia in January for the AFC Asian Cup.
At the Asian Cup itself, Korea Republic will open their campaign against Oman on January 10, before facing fellow Group A rivals Kuwait and host nation Australia.
