Kathmandu: Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) were crowned as the champions of Nepal's Martyrs Memorial A Division Football League for a record seventh time after mustering 35 points from 17 league matches.
MMC lost their dead rubber last match 2-1 against last year’s AFC President’s Cup participating Three Star Club but still managed to win the league by a point. Second placed Machhindra FC were shy by a point to MMC while previous President’s Cup runners-up Nepal Police Club finished fourth in the 13-team league.
The league win was MMC’s first league title in eight years. They had played in the second AFC President’s Cup in 2006 but failed to progress from the group stages. The win also ensured MMC’s participation in the group stages of the AFC President’s Cup 2014.
“I feel happier to be able to guide the team to title as captain and earn second league title of my career," local newspaper Republica quoted captain Sagar Thapa who is also the captain of Nepali national team. Thapa had won the domestic league title with the same club in 2006.
