Sydney: English Premier League powerhouse Arsenal won 2-0 against Australia’s Sydney FC in their pre-season friendly on Thursday.
It didn’t take long for Arsenal to gain an advantage when Sydney failed to clear Mesut Ozil’s corner, allowing Per Mertesacker to open the scoring in the fourth minute.
Graham Arnold’s side could have found an equaliser through Matt Simon’s attempt in the 34th minute, after Petr Cech deflected Josh Brillante’s effort but it struck the post. The Gunners maintained their lead going into the break.
The Sky Blues returned to impress the 80,000 supporters in Stadium Australia with countless attempts but to no avail, as a penalty was awarded to Arsene Wenger’s side in the 54th minute, after Sebastian Ryall was penalised for a handball in the penalty box.
Danny Welbeck stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Andrew Redmayne’s save gave Sydney hope of a comeback.
With seven minutes left on the clock, Alex Iwobi’s close range pass to debutant Alex Lacazette proved to be fruitful as the Frenchman’s shot found the back of the net.
Sydney’s John Iredale came close to finding a consolation goal three minutes into stoppage time but a save by Damian Martinez assured victory for the Gunners.
Arsenal will end their Australia tour on Saturday, July 15, as they take on Western Sydney Wanderers.
