Edmonton: Japan boss Norio Sasaki is set to stay on after the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, Japan Football Association President Kuniya Daini has said.
Sasaki led the Nadeshiko to the world title during the 2011 edition in Germany and on Saturday Japan reached the semi-finals after beating fellow Asian side Australia 1-0.
With Sasaki continuing to take charge, he is expected to lead the team through the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro if they pass the final round of qualifying.
“There’s nothing changing in that direction,” said Daini, who stated the JFA women’s committee will have the final say on the matter, but expects Sasaki to remain at the helm.
The 57-year-old was appointed coach of the Japan women’s national team in 2008. He topped his achievement at Germany 2011 by subsequently winning the FIFA World Coach of the Year and AFC Coach of the Year awards.
Japan will take on England in the semi-finals of the current campaign at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Wednesday (early Thursday morning in Kuala Lumpur).
