Goa: AFC Champions League play-off hopefuls Bengaluru FC maintained their unbeaten run in the Federation Cup after Robin Singh came off the bench to give his side a 1-0 win over Shillong Lajong.
After sitting out the opening period the former East Bengal forward came on at the start of the second-half to replace winger C.K. Vineeth and needed just five minutes to make his mark, with the 24-year-old receiving a pass from skipper Sunil Chhetri and sweeping home the only goal of the game.
Singh’s 50th minute effort at the Tilak Maidan took Bengaluru’s Federation Cup points tally to seven in three matches after a 3-2 win over Salgoacar followed a goalless draw against Mohun Bagan in their tournament opener. Bengaluru are next in Federation Cup action on Monday when they take on Pune for their third Group B fixture.
Ashley Westwood’s charges are scheduled to kick-off the defence of their I-League title on January 17 with a 2015 season-opener against Dempo, and play three more domestic fixtures before they head to Malaysia for their crucial AFC Champions League Preliminary Round 1 clash with Johor Darul Ta’zim on February 4.
The winners of the intriguing encounter between the league champions of India and Malaysia will advance to Preliminary Round 2 where they will face Bangkok Glass in Thailand six days later with China's Beijing Guoan awaiting the victorious side in the play-off on February 17, with a coveted place in the 2015 AFC Champions League Group Stage up for grabs.
