Colombo: Inaugural champions India began their 2014 AFC U-14 Girls’ Regional Championship for South and Central Asia campaign with a bang as they thrashed hosts Sri Lanka 7-1 on Thursday.
The Indians led Sri Lanka 3-0 at the half before going on to emphatically win the game by four more goals in their match hld at the City Football Stadium in the national capital.
Forward Roja Devi opened the scoring for the Indian side on 20 minutes with centres Lifa Gama (28”) and Srijana Tamang (30”) also getting on the score-sheet in the first half.
Priya Parathi Valappil’s side continued their drubbing of the Lankans as substitute striker Suman Pragyna Mohapatra got in her first of three goals as soon as three minutes after getting on the pitch on 50 minutes.
She scored her second after 58 minutes before defender Karen Kenneth scored the Indians’ sixth goal in the 70th minute. Suman completed her triple and her side’s final goal three minutes into stoppage time.
Warnakulasuriya Mahamuthukala Kankanamlage Imesha scored the consolation goal for the host team on 63 minutes.
DM Menaka Dissanayake-led Sri Lanka will next play Nepal while India take on Tajikistan on Friday.
