Rio de Janeiro: Asia’s two representatives now know their Women’s Olympic Football Tournament quarter-final opponents following the conclusion of the Group Stage action on Tuesday (local time).
China, silver medalists at Atlanta in 1996, will face European powerhouse and Group F runners-up Germany in Salvador on Friday (local time) after sealing second spot in Group E thanks to a Matchday Three 0-0 draw with Sweden. The stalemate came after a 3-0 defeat to Brazil and a 2-0 win over South Africa.
Meanwhile, Australia are set to play host nation Brazil on the same day in Belo Horizonte. Alen Stajcic’s charges beat Zimbabwe 6-1 in their final Group F game to seal third spot and grab one of the two places on offer to the two best third-placed sides. Going into their thrashing of Zimbabwe, Australia had lost 2-0 to Canada and drawn 2-2 with Germany.
Elsewhere, four-time champions USA take on Sweden, while Canada – the only team with a 100% record during the Group Stage – will tackle France.
