Mlebourne: Captain Lisa De Vanna scored as Australia national women’s team drew 1-1 with New Zealand in their final preparatory match before they head to Brazil for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The Football Ferns opened the scoring through a deft lob by Katie Bowen before De Vanna equalised with an excellent long-range strike. Both goals were scored in the second half
De Vanna’s 39th international goal prevented what would have been a famous win in Melbourne for New Zealand who last defeated Australia in 1994.
The Matildas beat New Zealand 2-0 thanks to the efforts of Caitlin Foord in their first friendly against the New Zealanders last Saturday.
Alen Stajcic’s side are in Group F of Rio 2016 where they have Canada, Germany and Zimbabwe as opponents and will kick off their campaign against the Canadians on August 3.
