Doha: Head coach Abdulghani Shahd remained grounded even after his Al Shorta side earned their first-ever AFC Champions League win at the 14th time of asking, defeating Al Ahli Saudi FC 2-1 on Matchday Four of the 2020 AFC Champions League on Thursday.
Al Shorta took the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour in the Group A through a Saad Natiq header, and Mohammed Al Majhad’s second half leveler for Al Ahli was quickly cancelled out with Mazin Fayyad winning it for Al Shorta in the 65th minute.
The win represents the first time Al Shorta have won a match in the AFC Champions League, having previously competed in the 2004 and 2005 editions, finishing bottom of their group on both occasions.
ACL2020: Arveladze and Lucescu satisfied with Pakhtakor, Al Hilal draw
Doha: Both head coaches left Al Janoub Stadium with a smile on their faces after Pakhtakor FC and Al Hilal SFC shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw in Matchday Four of the 2020 AFC Champions League Group B on Thursday.
Chances came few and far between, as both sides took control for periods of the game without ever landing a knockout blow, with Odiljon Khamrobekov and Sebastian Giovinco coming closest to breaking the deadlock for each of their sides.
Pakhtakor recovered from the Matchday Three defeat to Al Hilal to salvage a point against the same opponents, staying three points behind them and well in contention for what would be their first Round-of-16 appearance since 2010.
