Teams leverage new football technology initiatives at Qatar 2023

Doha: The action at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ has come thick and fast as, in the blink of an eye, the 18th edition of Asia’s flagship will culminate in the highly-anticipated Final on Saturday.

While much of the attention has been on the field of play and understandably so, given the thrilling nature of the 50 matches played to date, the tournament and the 24 participating teams have also benefited from a range of new football technology initiatives that have been implemented for the first time by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at the Continental showcase.

Doha: The non-stop drama continued in the semi-finals of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ with the hosts winning a thrilling contest against the Islamic Republic of Iran on Wednesday and Jordan stunning Korea Republic a day earlier.

Defending champions Qatar booked their place in the final thanks to Almoez Ali’s decisive strike in a 3-2 victory, while it was second-half goals from Yazan Al Naimat and Mousa Al Tamari that put paid to Korea’s bid to win a first continental title since 1960.

Doha: Amir Ghalenoei apologised for Islamic Republic of Iran’s 3-2 defeat to Qatar in their AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ semi-final on Wednesday, with the head coach saying he was to blame.

Despite Sardar Azmoun giving them a fourth minute lead, Iran were overrun by Qatar, with strikes from Jassem Gaber and Akram Afif putting the defending champions ahead. Alireza Jahanbakhsh restored parity from the penalty spot but Almoez Ali snatched victory for the hosts with his 82nd minute goal.
