Chonburi: Of all the young stars making a name for themselves in the AFC U-16 Women's Championship 2017 over the past week, none have shone as brightly as Kim Kyong-yong (photo above, right).
The DPR Korea forward has scored a remarkable eight goals in just three matches, finding the net at a rate of once every 33 minutes in the group stage.
She has given DPR Korea the lead in all three of their matches, and – with two more matches to play – seems destined to become the first player to reach double figures at the tournament since Australia’s Caitlin Foord in 2009.
While Foord would go onto to become AFC Women’s Player of the Year in 2016, Kim’s objectives are more immediate, and more to the point.
“I want to score goals as much as possible,” she said following her side’s 2-1 defeat to Japan in their final Group B match on Sunday.
“This my second time playing in an international competition. Previously I played in the East Asian Confederation (EAFF) Cup and I played well there too. I scored five goals.”
What is noticeable about Kim’s eight-goal haul is the variety of goals – with thumping headers accompanied by delicate half-volleys as well as times where pure pace has beaten opposing defences.
