Group B: IR Iran secure vital win against Qatar

Fergana: Mohammad Hazbavi’s second half penalty secured Islamic Republic of Iran a 1-0 win over Qatar in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 Group B match at the Istiqlol Stadium on Wednesday.

The win gives three-time winners Iran a head start in the race to advance to the quarter-finals while Qatar have it all to do after the defeat.

Group A: Iraq power past Indonesia

Tashkent: Ten-man Iraq made a winning start to the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 on Wednesday as Emad Mohammed’s side handed Indonesia a 2-0 defeat at Lokomotiv Stadium despite Charbel Shamoon’s sending off and a penalty miss by Abdulrazzaq Qassim.

Hayder Abdulkareem gave the Iraqis the lead in the 28th minute before Shamoon was dismissed in first half injury time while captain Qassim missed from the spot with 16 minutes remaining of an eventful Group A clash. Mohammed Jameel scored a late second for Iraq. 
 
The Iraqis did enough to take the points, however, as coach Mohammed attempts to lead his nation to their first Asian title at this level since winning the trophy in the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2000.

Group B: Vietnam edge Australia

Fergana: Nguyen Quoc Viet’s sixth minute goal secured Vietnam a 1-0 win over Australia in their opening AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 Group B fixture at the Istiqlol Stadium on Wednesday.

The result gives Vietnam an early boost while Australia will have to bounce back in their remaining matches to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.

Tashkent: The AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 kicks off on Wednesday with 16 teams aiming for the title. 

The erstwhile U-19 championship, returning under its new U-20 brand, will also serve as the qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023, which is scheduled to be held from May 20 to June 11.
