Groups finalised for #AFCU23 Qatar 2024 Qualifiers

Kuala Lumpur: The draw for the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Qatar 2024 Qualifiers was finalised at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The hopefuls were divided into 11 groups – 10 groups of four teams each, with the last group containing three. Qatar, meanwhile, will play in the Qualifiers for exposure with their matches classified as friendlies.

Hopefuls set for AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Qatar 2024 Qualifiers draw

Kuala Lumpur: The qualifying journey for the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Qatar 2024 will be revealed on Thursday, May 25, 2023 when the official draw ceremony takes place at 3pm local time at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A total of 43 teams have submitted their interest to compete in the Qualifiers for the sixth edition of the tournament, which will be held from September 4 to 12 this year.

Maurice Revello test for four Asian hopefuls ahead of Qualifiers

Kuala Lumpur: Australia, Japan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia will compete in the Maurice Revello Tournament as part of their preparations for the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Qatar 2024 Qualifiers.

Formerly known as the Toulon Tournament, the competition is scheduled for June 5-18 in Aix-en-Provence, France.
 
Besides the four Asian sides, Bolivia, Costa Rica, France, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Panama, Togo and Venezuela will be the other teams in the fray.

Asia’s top 16 teams competed for 19 days across 32 matches in the cities of Tashkent and Qarshi, with Saudi Arabia eventually becoming the fifth team in as many editions to clinch the coveted crown after the West Asians defeated hosts Uzbekistan 2-0 in a captivating decider.

AFC President congratulates Saudi Arabia on securing first-ever AFC U23 Asian Cup™ title

Tashkent: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has congratulated Saudi Arabia for winning their maiden AFC U23 Asian Cup™ crown after the Green Falcons defeated hosts Uzbekistan 2-0 in an enthralling final at the Bunyodkor Stadium on Sunday.

Runners-up in 2013 and 2020, Saudi Arabia finally clinched the coveted title with Ahmed Alghamdi and Firas Albrikan finding the back of the net in the final as the Green Falcons kept an impressive flawless defensive record throughout the tournament.

Tashkent: Head coach Saad Al Shehri was in a joyous mood after leading Saudi Arabia to their first-ever AFC U23 Asian Cup™ title, saying the victory was just the beginning of a successful journey for his players.

The young Green Falcons displayed great determination to overcome an Uzbekistan side that had the support of over 30,000 fans at the Bunyodkor Stadium, with Ahmed Al Ghamdi breaking the deadlock in the 48th minute, before Firas Albrikan sealed the 2-0 victory over the hosts.

Tashkent: Uzbekistan were denied a second AFC U23 Asian Cup™ title after losing to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 final on Sunday, but head coach Timur Kapadze was proud of his players for giving their all. 

After a slow start to the match at the Bunyodkor Stadium, Saudi Arabia came out stronger in the second half with Ahmed Alghamdi and Firas Albrikan scoring with the hosts unable to penetrate a defence that ended the tournament without conceding even once.
