Preview - Third Place Playoff: Japan v Australia

Tashkent: Japan and Australia will not be lacking motivation when they face-off in the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 Third Place Playoff on Saturday. 

Australia finished third in Thailand 2020, their best-ever finish in the tournament, and while head coach Trevor Morgan expects a tough fight from 2016 champions Japan, his aim is to equal their record of two years ago.

Disappointed Fujita sets eyes on third-place finish

Tashkent: As Japan’s quest to reclaim the title came to an end in the semi-finals of the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2022, Joel Chima Fujita said the defeat was caused by the team finding their momentum too late. 

Japan, seeking to add the 2022 title to the one won in 2016, were defeated 2-0 by a vibrant Uzbekistan side in their semi-final on Wednesday, with the loss coming just days after Go Oiwa’s side had played their best to end Korea Republic’s reign in the quarter-finals.

Defeat means instead of vying for the title in Sunday’s final, Japan will face Australia in the third-place playoff on Saturday.

Hussain Al Eisa and Ayman Yahya scored as Saudi Arabia defeated Australia 2-0 on Wednesday to seal their place in the final against Uzbekistan.
