UAE’s Mabkhout, Lima, Matar to miss ties against Syria and IR Iran

Dubai: United Arab Emirates’ all-time top scorer Ali Mabkhout, Fabio Lima and Ismail Matar were all left out from the United Arab Emirates squad for their AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to Qatar matches against Syria and Islamic Republic of Iran.

The 31-year-old Mabkhout, who is the leading scorer in the AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to Qatar, has missed the last seven matches for UAE Pro League side Al Jazira after suffering a muscle injury in the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.

Kuala Lumpur: Three-time winners Kuwait SC will take on Lebanon’s Al Ansar as well as Al Seeb Club from Oman and Jableh of Syria in Group A after the draw for the 2022 AFC Cup was conducted in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Kuwait SC, who share the record for the most wins in the competition with Iraq’s Air Force Club, will look to add to the trophies claimed in 2009, 2012 and 2013 when they kick off their latest title challenge in May.

Kuala Lumpur: Defending champions Al Hilal SFC will face Tajikistan’s Istiklol in the Group Stage of the 2022 AFC Champions League, marking the second time in successive seasons the pair have faced off in the continental club championship.
