Clinical Australia defeat Denmark to book q-final spot

Sydney: Australia progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 after a 2-0 win over Denmark at Stadium Australia on Monday.

Caitlin Foord opened the scoring on 29 minutes before Hayley Raso doubled the lead on the 70th minute as the Matildas advanced to the last eight for the fourth time and their first appearance since the 2015 edition. 

Tony Gustavsson’s side will next face either France or Morocco on Saturday at Brisbane Stadium.

England scrape past Nigeria to reach last eight

Brisbane: England scraped into the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 when they beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in Brisbane on Monday.

Despite Nigeria having the better of the chances throughout, the European Champions – reduced to 10 players after 87 minutes – snuck home in front of 50,000 spectators after the match had finished 0-0 at the end of extra time
 
England held on after playmaker Lauren James received a red card for a needless stamp and will know they have to improve if they want to add the World Cup to their European crown.
 
They will face Colombia or Jamaica on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.

Melbourne: Goalkeeper Zecira Musovic hailed her teammates after Sweden edged the United States on penalties to advance to the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 quarter-finals on Sunday. 

The defending champions found Musovic a stumbling block in the shoot-out following a goalless stalemate over 120 minutes, with Sweden to face Japan in Auckland on Friday.

Jonker admits relief after Netherlands survive South Africa scare

Sydney: Netherlands head coach Andries Jonker did not hide his relief after side avoided becoming the latest to be on the end of a FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 shock on Sunday.

The 2019 runners-up defeated South Africa 2-0 in their Round of 16 tie but had goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar to thank for keeping the African champions at bay in the first half.
 
Jill Roord scored after nine minutes to put the Dutch on their way against a team ranked 45 places below them and featuring in the knockout rounds for the first time.
 
South Africa goalkeeper Kaylin Swart then made a mess of an innocuous Lineth Beerensteyn shot midway through the second half to give the Dutch a second.
