Group D: England close in on knockout stage spot

Sydney: European champions England stood on the brink of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 last 16 after a Lauren James cracker in the sixth minute gave them a 1-0 win over Denmark on Friday.

But an otherwise hugely satisfactory night for England in front of just over 40,000 fans in Sydney was marred by what looked like a serious knee injury to influential midfielder Keira Walsh.
 
On a night of mixed emotions, Sarina Wiegman's side will seal their place in the knockout rounds if Asian champions China PR fail to beat debutants Haiti later Friday.

Brisbane: Australia's captain Sam Kerr will be given until the last minute to prove her fitness for their must-win FIFA Women's World Cup clash against Canada on Monday, head coach Tony Gustavsson says.

The prolific striker missed Australia's opening two games - a 1-0 win over Ireland and Thursday's shock 3-2 loss to Nigeria - with a calf injury.
