Edmonton: A stoppage-time goal by Lisi Wang helped China beat the Netherlands 1-0 at the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 at the Commonwealth Stadium on Thursday.
The Chinese dominated possession but were unable to find the Netherlands’ net until Wang scored the winner in the 91st minute with her fifth international goal.
Goal-scoring opportunities seemed illusive until midway through the half as Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema had a rare sight of goal as she latched onto a superb Manon Melis pass but the pressure was too much and she sent her shot wide.
Suddenly it was China looking more likely to score first as Peng Han impressively danced into the box and shot from 15 yards away but Sari Van Veenendaal pushed it over the bar.
Guixin Ren headed on goal from close range two minutes later but it lacked power, although Van Veenendaal still had to catch the effort on goal-line.
Another chance surfaced in the second half as Jiali Tang cut in from the left inside the penalty area but her shot went straight at Van Veenendaal who pushed the ball away.
Midway through the half Tang shot a venomous ball from 25 yards which dipped onto the crossbar and bounced away to safety.
Substitute Jun Ma then created arguably the best chance of the game as she stabbed a close-range volley over the crossbar from close range.
The long-awaited winner arrived when Lisi ghosted in behind the defence and latched onto a long ball to stab it home.
Having lost to hosts Canada 1-0 in their campaign opener, the Chinese will take on New Zealand on June 15 (Winnipeg time) at the Winnipeg Stadium.
