Tokyo Olympics - Group E: Japan's hopes suffer blow after defeat to Great Britain

Sapporo: Japan fell to a 1-0 defeat against Great Britain in their second Group E tie of the Tokyo Olympics Women’s Football tournament on Saturday. 

The win meant Britain have sealed their place in the quarter-finals with two wins while Japan - on one point after their Matchday One draw with Canada - must now defeat Chile to stand a chance of advancing. Canada defeated Chile 2-1 in Group E's other match on Saturday.

Tokyo: They squandered an opportunity to go to the top of their Tokyo Olympics group, but Tony Gustavsson declared himself proud of his Australia side after their 4-2 loss to his native Sweden on Saturday.

Leading 2-1 early in the second half thanks to a Sam Kerr brace, the Matildas couldn't hold off a clinical Swedish side, with Fridolina Rolfo scoring twice alongside goals from Lina Hurtig and substitute Stina Blackstenius.

The match could potentially have ended differently if Kerr had converted a penalty kick with the score at 3-2 in the 70th minute, but Hedvig Lindahl’s save denied the Australian captain a hat-trick, and ultimately sent them to third place in the group with one game remaining.
