Saudi Arabia too good for Jamaica

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia produced an impressive display to defeat Jamaica 3-0 in an international friendly match at the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Stadium on Saturday.

It was Saudi Arabia’s their first official match in 2020 as they prepare for the resumption of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

The home team took the lead after 10 minutes when they were awarded a spot- kick after a handball by Jamaican defender Kemar Lawrence.

Salem Al Dawsari saw his attempt from the spot blocked by Jamaica goalkeeper Dwayne Miller but the Saudi captain reacted quickly to score from the rebound.

Jamaica came close in the 25th minute but Norman Campbell's attempt was first blocked by Sultan Al Ghanam before goalkeeper Mohammed Al Rubeai cleared the ball.

Saudi Arabia doubled their advantage one minute before the break when Ayman Yahya stole the ball from a Jamaican defender before sending a neat pass to Saleh Al Shehri, who slotted home on the right side past Miller.

Herve Renard’s team maintained their superiority in the second half and added a third goal in the 77th minute when Al Dawsari made a run from the midfield before passing the ball to Abdullah Al Hamdan, who set up Firas Al Brikan for the easy task of scoring into an empty goalmouth.

The two sides will meet again on Tuesday at the same venue.
