Afghan Women’s Premier League glory for Herat

Kabul: Herat emerged victorious in season four of the Afghan Women’s Premier League, defeating Kabul on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Friday’s final.

The two sides traded goals in regulation time, but couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes, with Herat ultimately prevailing 4-3 from the penalty spot.

Herat took early control of the decider thanks to a first-half goal from Fateme Heidari, with the striker’s 13th goal of the tournament making her the competition’s top scorer.

Kabul went to the interval a goal behind, but they came surging back into contention in the second half, with a goal from standout player Mainzha Noori forcing the game to extra-time.

With 30 additional minutes unable to determine a winner, the title was decided by spot kicks, with Herat holding their nerve to win the national title.

Kabul Noori was crowned the tournament’s top player, while Herat shot stopper Elaha Safdary won the Best Goalkeeper award.

Six teams representing different provinces took part in the 2020 Afghan Women’s Premier League, which was held in a tournament format.
