Amman: Al Wehdat will head into the 2021 AFC Champions League with a spring in their step after defeating Al Jazira 2-0 to lift the Jordan Super Cup at Amman International Stadium on Sunday.

The win is a big boost for Al Wehdat before travelling to Saudi Arabia where they will be playing in Group D of the 2021 AFC Champions League alongside Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, Qatar’s Al Sadd SC and the winners of the playoff between Islamic Republic of Iran’s Foolad Khouzestan FC and Al Ain of UAE.

The Jordan league champions had a slow start to the match as Al Jazira dominated the first half hour, but without really troubling Al Wehdat goalkeeper Ahmed Abdel Sattar.

Having absorbed Al Jazira’s pressure, Al Wehdat broke the deadlock in the last minute of the first half when Feras Shelbaieh’s cross was headed on by Senegalese forward Abdulaziz N'Diaye to Ahmed Zreik, who nodded the ball home from close range.

The two sides had several chances in the second period and Al Wehdat should have doubled their lead in the 80th minute but the woodwork denied Khaled Essam.

However, Al Wehdat sealed the win in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Ibrahim Al Jawabreh broke clear before cutting the ball to Fadi Awad who scored into an empty net.

Al Wehdat open their 2021 AFC Champions League campaign against Al Nassr on April 14.
