ASEAN & East Domestic Wrap: Ho Chi Minh City FC move top

Kuala Lumpur: Defending V-League champions Hanoi FC suffered a first defeat of the season in Vietnam as Ho Chi Minh City FC won their second successive game to come out of the weekend as the only team with a 100% record. 


Elsewhere in ASEAN, A-League leaders Sydney FC drew with Perth Glory, Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta'zim were held at home and Persib Bandung maintained their lead at the top of Indonesia's Liga 1.

There was also plenty of action in Cambodia and Singapore while in East Asia there were FA Cup quarter-finals in Hong Kong and a pair of huge scores in Guam, so join the-AFC.com as we review the latest rounds of fixtures from the two regions.

Vietnam: Hanoi lose, Ho Chi Minh City move top

Jeremie Lynch bagged a brace as Than Quang Ninh claimed a surprise 3-1 win over 2019 V-League champions Hanoi FC to complete an excellent week in which they also ran out 4-1 winners against Cambodia's Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC in the AFC Cup.

Ho Chi Minh City FC, who were also victorious on the Continent last week, are the only side in Vietnam to have won their first two matches after Nguyen Xuan Nam scored in the fifth minute of added time to seal a 1-0 win over Thanh Hoa.

Their city rivals Sai Gon sit second after a 4-1 victory over Da Nang, who dropped to the bottom of the standings, while Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Viettel – third and fourth respectively – played out an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Fifth-placed Hai Phong drew 1-1 against Quang Nam, Song Lam Nghe An picked up their first win of the season by seeing off Becamex Binh Duong 1-0 and Nam Dinh posted a 2-1 victory over newly promoted Hong Linh Ah Tinh, who remain in search of their first points of the season.


Australia: League leaders held

Runaway A-League leaders Sydney FC were held to a goalless draw at home to Perth Glory on Saturday but second-placed Melbourne City could not take advantage as they remained 10 points adrift following a 1-1 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers.

Wellington Phoenix are the A-League's form team, as the side from New Zealand won their fourth successive game with a 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory to move within a point of Melbourne City.

Another team who are looking strong at present is Robbie Fowler's Brisbane Roar as they won 1-0 at home to bottom side Central Coast Mariners, whose miserable run has now stretched to nine defeats in a row.

Newcastle Jets, meanwhile, climbed to third from bottom with an excellent 3-0 away win against Adelaide United and they are now unbeaten in six league games.


Indonesia: Persib stay perfect

Liga 1 leaders Persib Bandung made it three wins from three after coming from behind to defeat PSS Sleman 2-1 to continue their excellent start to the season and remain two points clear at the top of the standings.

Bali United bounced back from a disappointing loss against the Philippines' Ceres Negros in the AFC Cup last week with Melvin Platje scoring twice in a 3-1 victory over Madura United as the defending champions stayed second.

Borneo are third following a 2-1 win over Persela, who dropped to the bottom of the table and are now the only side in Liga 1 yet to have picked up a point, while Persipura Jayapura are fourth after a topsy-turvy 4-3 victory against Persebaya Surabaya.

After back-to-back draws, Persiraja Banda Aceh recorded their first win of the campaign by edging past Persik Kederi 1-0 in a battle of the newly promoted sides.


Malaysia: JDT drop points but remain top

Johor Darul Ta'zim dropped their first points in the Malaysia Super League after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Felda United, although they maintained their three-point lead at the top.

Second-placed Perak were unable to capitalise on JDT's slip-up after they were beaten 2-1 by Sabah, who moved to third, while, after a strong start to the season, Melaka United have lost their last two following a 1-0 defeat to Pahang.

Kedah and UITM FC picked up their first wins of the season, meanwhile, as they recorded 2-0 and 3-1 victories over Selangor and PDRM respectively.


Cambodia: Crown and Svay Rieng continue to set the pace

There was a full set of matches in the Cambodia championship over the weekend, but it remains traditional powerhouse Phnom Penh Crown and defending champions Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng who lead the way after both picked up wins on the weekend to remain unbeaten.

Svay Rieng put three past EDC while Crown edged Angkor Tiger 1-0, although the latter remain above the holders so far due to a superior goal difference.

Soltilo Angkor came out on top of a six-goal thriller beating National Police Commissary 4-2, while National Defense Ministry edged Visakha 1-0.

Asia Euro United had the biggest win on the weekend with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Bati Academy U18, while Kirivong Sok Sen Chey shared a 1-1 draw with Nagaworld.


Singapore: Tampines go top; Hougang's bad week continues

The mid-week AFC Cup fortunes of both Tampines Rovers and Hougang United continued on the home front over the weekend.

Tampines, who defeated Myanmar's Shan United 2-1 last Tuesday, picked up a second consecutive win with a 2-0 defeat of Tanjong Pagar to send the Stags top of the Singapore Premier League, while Hougang, 1-0 losers in Yangon in the AFC Cup, were beaten 2-1 by Geylang International.

In the weekend's other fixutre, Balestier Khalsa were 2-0 winners against Young Lions.

Hong Kong: FA Cup semi-finals take shape

While the league remains on hiatus, there was action in the FA Cup in Hong Kong where there were plenty of goals and drama on show.

Taking the spotlight was an incredible match last Thursday between Yuen Long and Pegasus, with Jean Moser's four-goal haul eventually seeing the Flying Horsemen home in extra-time.

Friday saw league leaders R&F ease past Happy Valley 4-0, while Sunday brought a classic between two traditional heavyweights as Eastern defeated Kitchee 2-0. The semi-final line-up was completed on Monday afternoon as Wofoo Tai Po defeated Southern 4-1 at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground.

Guam: U-19s, Islanders win big

A pair of big wins headlined the action in Guam as Guam U-19 scored 18 in a humbling of U.O.G. Tritons, while Islanders put 13 past Guam Shipyard.

With league leaders BOG Strykers sitting out the weekend's fixtures, second-placed Napa Rovers were able to close the gap on their rivals with a 6-0 win over Quality Distributors, with LOA Heat also netting six times in a 6-1 win over Sidekicks.
