Group A: Myanmar make semis, Malaysia set for final day drama

Manila: Myanmar are through to the 2019 Sea Games men's football semi-finals while Malaysia kept their hopes alive with a win over Timor-Leste in Group A action on Monday.


Myanmar defeated Cambodia to move to 10 points from four matches while Malaysia beat Timor-Leste 4-0 for their first win of the tournament.

The second semi-finalists from the group will be decided on Wednesday, with Cambodia, Malaysia and Philippines all on four points. Second-placed Cambodia will play Malaysia while Philippines meet Timor-Leste.

Myanmar 2-1 Cambodia

Myanmar started the better of the two teams but it was Cambodia who took the lead in the 22nd minute when Sin Sophanat punished custodian Sann Sat Naing for a mistake.

Myanmar drew level five minutes later through Lwin Moe Aung, who fired home Kaung Khant's pass.

They sealed their place in the semi-finals in the 88th minute when the Cambodia custodian turned Aung Kaung Mann cross into his own net.

Malaysia 4-0 Timor-Leste

Malaysia, desperately in need of a win after their 1-0 defeat to Philippines last time out, took the lead five minutes into the match with Timor-Leste's Filomeno Junior da Costa sending the ball into his own net.

Forward Hadi Fayyadh doubled his side's advantage in the 35th minute when he capitalised on a poor clearance and Hadi made it 3-0 a minute before the break.

Akhyar Rashid scored Malaysia's fourth in the 81st minute as they set themselves up for a nerve-wracking Matchday Five.

In Tuesday's Group B action, Vietnam will look to edge closer to the semi-finals with a win over Singapore while Thailand and Indonesia need wins against Laos and Brunei Darussalam in the race for last four spots.
