Honda's arrival is a welcome boost for Portimonense, who are currently 13th in the Primeira Liga standings on 15 points.

"I wanted to come back to Europe. I saw it as a good move and accepted the offer," said Honda, who will be playing in his seventh country outside of Japan.

Honda, the only Japanese to score at three FIFA World Cups, will join compatriots Koki Anzai and Kosuke Nakamura as well as Korea Republic's Lee Seung-woo, currently on loan from Belgian side Sint-Truidense, at Portimonense.

The evergreen midfielder is among the most successful Japanese footballers, scoring 37 goals - including four at FIFA World Cups - in 98 appearances for the national team.
