Korea Republic turn on the power to see off U23 compatriots

Goyang: Korea Republic were on top of their game as Paulo Bento's side defeated their U23 counterparts 3-0 in a friendly played before some 2,000 fans at the Goyang Stadium on Monday.

Having needed a late goal to salvage a 2-2 draw on Thursday, the senior side turned on the power with three second half goals to see off their compatriots, who had won the AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020 in January.

Having been outplayed for the better part of the second half on Thursday, Korea Republic showed more purpose and dictated terms from the start in Monday's return leg.

Their dominance, however, didn't translate into goals and they had to wait till the 54th minute to take the lead with Lee Dong-gyeong finishing off a quick counter attack.

The senior team doubled their lead in the 88th minute thanks to An Chan-gi's miscue, with the goalkeeper rushing off his line to clear the ball with a header, only for it to land invitingly for Lee Ju-yong, who calmly volleyed the ball into the empty net.

Two minutes later, substitute Lee Yeong-jae completed a resounding win for Korea Republic to register a 5-2 win on aggregate.
