Lebanon's Al Ansar beat Nejmeh to seal domestic double

Beirut: Al Ansar FC completed a domestic double after defeating archrivals Nejmeh SC on penalties in the Lebanese FA Cup final on Wednesday.

Penalties were needed to settle the final after Nader Matar’s opening goal in the first half was cancelled out by Nejmeh’s Ali Hamam, who scored with five minutes left in the game.

Having lost the Lebanese Premier League title to Al Ansar on a dramatic final day, Nejmeh were hoping for some Cup cheer but found themselves on the backfoot when Matar broke the deadlock with a stunning strike on 23 minutes.

Nejmeh were markedly better after the interval and equalised in the 84th minute as skipper Hamam nodded home at the back post from Hasan Kourani’s wicked delivery.

Al Ansar, however, were sharper in the penalty shootout as Nejmeh missed two of their first three spot-kicks, with goalkeeper Nazih Assaad then denying Ali Aladdin to hand Al Ansar their 15th Lebanese FA Cup.
