Mohammedan confirm I-League return after win over Bhawanipore

Kalyani: Mohammedan Sporting made sure of their place in the 2020-21 I-League after defeating local rivals Bhawanipore FC on Friday — returning to the competition after a gap of seven years.

Goals from Vanlalbiaa Chhangte and Gani Nigam gave the Black Panthers a 2-0 win in at the Kalyani Stadium, which sealed them first place in five-team I-League Qualifiers with a match to spare.

The win took Mohammedan, who last played in the I-League in the 2013-14 season, to nine points with one match to play, three ahead of Bhawanipore — who also have one game remaining.

However, Bhawanipore cannot overtake Mohammedan based on their head-to-head record after Friday’s result.

Chhangte gave Mohammedan the lead in the 27th minute as he finished off a pass from SK Faiaz.

Bhawanipore had their chances to get back into the match but failed to capitalise and were punished in the 67th minute as substitute Nigam doubled Mohammedan’s lead by finishing off Safiul Rahaman's free-kick from the right.
